02/07/2008 - Give Kids A Smile |
 |
During the
annual Give Kids A Smile Day at Jefferson Community College,
State Rep. Jason Wilson observed the dental education and
services provided by area dentists and dental hygienists, and
JCC dental assisting students. Dozens of underserved children
received free dental care tips, dental check- ups and dental
services. Children even visited with the Tooth Fairy. At the
program, seated, from left, are dental assisting student Tiffany
Schwender and dental patient Rayn Martineau; standing, dental
assisting student Tiffany Staffilino, Rep. Wilson, dental
assisting student Many Aberegg playing the Tooth Fairy, and
Barry Conley, representative of Henry Schein Inc. which provides
free supplies for the smile day project. |

Congratulations to Bunny Green, winner of the 2007 Tommasone
Award! |

Bunny Green was
presented with the 2007 Tommasone Award at ODEFA's 30th
Anniversary Celebration on Friday, September 14th, 2007. The
Celebration commemorating thirty years for The Ohio Dental
Expanded Functions Association, was held in Columbus during the
ODA Annual Session Convention. Bunny is a three time winner of
this prestigious award given in recognition of her outstanding
contributions to ODEFA. The Tommasone Award, the highest honor
to receive, originated in 1980 when Dr. Dennis Tommasone, an
ODEFA Advisor, wanted to recognize individuals who devote their
time and energy to the organization with exemplary
achievements. Bunny won the award first in 1989 with the second
coming seven years later in 1996. Bunny has been instrumental in
every aspect of ODEFA's success and is well known and loved by
all!

Welcome Dr.
Keith Norwalk! Dr. Norwalk of Genoa, is ODEFA's
newest Advisory Board Member. We first met Dr.
Norwalk at the May 17, 2007 Toledo area Continuing
Education Seminar sponsored by ODEFA and Dentsply
where he was the key speaker. Dr. Norwalk was
invited as key speaker by colleague and ODEFA
Advisory Board Member/Toledo Trustee, Dr. Jim
Kwasniak. Dr. Norwalk spoke to attendees very
enthusiastically about "The Utilization of EFDA's
in the Dental Practice". He is a strong advocate
for promoting recognition of our profession in the
dental community. We are very appreciative of Dr.
Norwalk for lending his time and expertise at
our most recent State Board Meeting in Columbus on
October 21, 2007. We are honored to have Dr. Norwalk
on our Advisory Board!

Welcome Kristi
Forshey-Graham! Kristi is
ODEFA's new Secretary! She was sworn in at the Annual
Session Board Meeting on September 15, 2007. We are
pleased to have her on board with us! |
| Kristi Forshey-Graham I
am a 1993 graduate of Tallmadge High School where I
served as President of my Cooperative Business Education
class and captain of the color-guard. I graduated from
The University of Akron in 1996 with an associate’s
degree in Business Management. I attended Case Western
Reserve University and graduated from the EFDA program
in 2003. I currently work for Dr. Gerald Sisko in
Tallmadge. I have worked with Dr. Sisko for 15 years. I
have been teaching color-guard for 15 years. Schools I
have instructed for include Akron Firestone, Wadsworth,
Revere, and Crestwood High School. I am currently the
color-guard instructor at Wadsworth High School and work
with an independent organization, Anthem Winterg-uard,
out of Akron. I am also the secretary for the OIPA (Ohio
Indoor Performance Association), the newest color-guard
circuit in Ohio. I have been married for 5 years and my
husband, Ron, is the band director at Fredericktown High
School. We have 3 crazy cats. When I am not restoring
teeth my hobbies include: hanging out with my friends,
crocheting, and watching football. Go Buckeyes! |

ODEFA is a permanent sponsor for
the OSDB...
February 2006, ODEFA contacted the Ohio State Dental Board
to ask for permanent OSDB sponsorship for continuing education
courses that we offer to our members. We were granted the
sponsorship immediately and have since been following the OSDB
rules for acceptable continuing education. Any time you take a
CEU from ODEFA, the state dental board will recognize your hours
and credit them to your license or certificate. |

The Ohio State Dental Board has
started the Ohio EFDA Registration process by putting the
EFDA registration application on their website.
You are required to send them proof
of successful completion of your training program, proof of
passing your state EFDA boards, current CPR certification, and
HBV immunization along with $20 and a recent color photograph.

The Scholarship Award winner from
Jefferson Community College is Jessica West. Jessica lives in
Mt. Vernon with her husband, Brian and two sons, Cody (5) and
Jesse (11.) They have a family cat named Bullet. Their oldest
son, Jesse, became interested in motocross racing and that was
the family project. Every weekend was spent encouraging
and supporting Jesse as he raced. His racing has been
delayed only for a short time while Jessica is in EFDA school.
She is currently working 2
days a week for Dr. Plikerd, an Orthodontist and 1 day week for
the Newark Family Dentistry office as a chair side assistant.

This is an open chat forum for any
EFDA with questions and concerns.
It’s designed to build confidence,
pass on information and update all EFDAs.
The goal is to begin with a few
small forums and 2 experienced EFDA as mentors.
Later the association hopes to
provide this service to on a regular basis all over the state. |

college of USAF, University of Maryland and City Colleges of
Chicago. In 1981, John received his Certification of Dental
Assisting (CDA), where he was ranked in the top 1/3 of all
applicants nationwide. He attended Case Western Reserve Expanded
Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) School. He has had over 30
years of chairside experience and over 20 years in mercury-free
practices. |

Cynthia Stahl, ODEFA Vice President
was recently appointed to serve a three-year renewable term on
the Owens Community College Dental Hygiene Advisory Committee.
She was recommended by Owens faculty member, Dr. James Kwasniak.
Advisory committee members meet to lend their expertise and
guidance to help faculty and administration effectively meet the
needs of their students and the communities they serve.
Committee members collaborate to:
-
Assess /fontfamily>
the currency of Owens programs.
-
Develop solid curricula so
graduates are prepared for what they will encounter in their
careers and in future educational pursuits.
-
Evaluate strengths and
weaknesses in course offerings.
-
Plan for facilities and
equipment.
-
Serve as a communication channel
between the College and specific areas of the community.
-
Keep the College informed of
trends in the labor markets.
-
Suggest marketing strategies.
-
Provide a strong supportive
voice to inform the community of our program Owens makes
every effort to ensure that each advisory committee
membership represents the diversity of the student
population and the community.
During the first meeting, on
Wednesday April 26, 2006, committee members were introduced.
Topics discussed include: Graduating Class of 2005- Performance
Outcomes, Status of Enrollment for 2006 through 2008, Program
Outcomes, Admissions Criteria, EFDA Program for CDA’s and RDH’s,
Accreditation and the Advisory Committee Role.
Student Representatives were ODEFA
Members Brittany Carles and Kimberly Cipriani.
The next meeting will be held in the
fall of 2006. |
