Linda Gibbens-West Scholarship Presented to Owens EFDA Certificate Program Student, Kami Klaus

Congratulations Kami Claus, 2010 Linda Gibbens-West Scholarship Winner!

On April 27th, Kami Claus, Owens EFDA Certificate Program student, was presented with the Linda Gibbens-West Scholarship check for $1,000, a certificate for framing, and a bouquet of flowers. Kami was very honored and appreciative!

ODEFA received about 30 scholarship application. Each one is graded by several different people who do not know the applicant’s identity or school. The five categories are neatness, spelling and grammar, financial need, passion for dentistry, and initiative. Each person can receive a high score of 25, based on a score of 0-5 in each category. Once the applicant with the highest score is revealed, the final test comes when their instructor is asked if they exhibit a positive and worthy attitude in the classroom as well as on paper!

Kami’s instructors gave a great recommendation when asked if she would be a good candidate to receive the scholarship.

Kami is a one of our best students. She is the total package! Well rounded, genuine, passionate about dentistry, skilled, has a positive attitude, asks for guidance, and accepts constructive criticism when needed. She is a great candidate to receive the scholarship!”

We are pleased to introduce our newest Advisory Board Member,
Dr. Ron Arndt, from the Cleveland Component!

Ronald F. Arndt, DDS, MBA, MAGD

Master Certified Coach

Dr. Ronald Arndt is the founder and President of Solutions 4 Business, a Professional Practice and Small Business Coaching firm devoted to creating personal and professional balance, wealth and direction for private practice dentists.  Dr. Ron, THE DENTAL COACH™ works with dentists who want to be in control of their practice rather than the practice controlling them.  What that means for them is that they think, act and behave like an ethical CEO because they want to lead more, manage less and be much more profitable in much less time.  His clients experience less stress, have more time and money and a healthier business and personal life.  Dr. Arndt is a graduate of Coach U and is the first dentist in the United States to receive the professional coach certification (PCC) from Coach U and the International Coach Federation (ICF).  He is the first and only dentist in the world to hold the coveted designation Master Certified Coach (MCC) awarded by the ICF.

Dr. Arndt retired from twenty years of private dental practice followed by five years of corporate management experience.  He has actively spent the last eight years professionally coaching dentists helping them and their teams achieve more of what they want: increases in profits, increases in referrals and treatment acceptance, lowered overhead, less negative stress, improved doctor/staff relations, and more time to spend with family and outside interests. He has earned his undergraduate degree in Communications (BA) and his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the Ohio State University; a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Baldwin-Wallace College and was awarded his Masters (MAGD) from the Academy of General Dentistry.  Committed to supporting his clients and their staffing issues, he has earned a Professional Certificate in Human Resources from Baldwin-Wallace College. Active in organized dentistry, he currently serves as a trustee for the Ohio Dental Association Foundation.  In addition, he completed a second term as the President of City Council for the community in which he resides, North Ridgeville.

Component Changes
Coming Soon!

ODEFA is growing!!! Our membership is increasing!
We are currently working on redefining the component boundaries to accommodate the growth of the organization.

Presently, we have 5 components: Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton/Cincinnati, Toledo and Ohio Valley.

The plan is to create more components with smaller amounts of members in each region. We are considering dividing the components by counties according to how many members are in each county.

With the ground work laid out, the project is expected to be finalized by late 2008 or early 2009.

Watch for continuous updates of this project on the website at www.odefa.org
Catch the latest updates in the next issue of "The Expanded"!

Medical Coverage Update

Exciting News! We have found two options for our members to be eligible to receive reduced "group" rates on medical coverage and more! All you need to do is contact them to get the process started!

OPTION 1

Is your employer an ODA member?
If so -You can get...
Health and Disability insurance through ODA!
While researching health insurance for our membership, we contacted the ODA for their suggestions. Amazingly, we were informed that employees of ODA member dentists are eligible to apply for health and disability insurance programs through the ODA. The employee must work for the member dentist at least 20 hours per week in order to apply for this insurance program. The member dentist does not have to be enrolled in the ODA's insurance program in order for the employee to be eligible (just has to be an ODA member!) To learn more about this, call the ODA or go to their website.

OPTION 2

The Ohio Dental Expanded Functions Association Has Joined with the OHIO CHAMBER ALLIANCE

The Ohio Dental Expanded Functions Association has joined with the Ohio Chamber Alliance (TOCA), one of Ohio's largest growth associations, to provide discounted insurance programs to our membership. The Ohio Chamber Alliance offers discounts on healthcare, home, auto and commercial insurance. Anyone interested in obtaining quotes should contact David Carr at Robert Carr Insurance (330) 856-6270. This is an excellent benefit program designed to assist our membership and the bottom line.
In addition to the insurance programs, the Ohio Chamber Alliance offers discounts on workers' comp premiums with savings up to 85% and managed care organization affiliation.

Cambodia

Operation Pacific Angel
Makes a Difference
by Rebecca Nicoll, EFDA

In May Dr. Joan Salido, a member of our Advisory Board and Rebecca Ruchel Nicoll, EFDA had the opportunity to be part of a medical humanitarian mission. Both are part of the U.S. Air Force 445th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Kampong Chang Province, Cambodia is a rural farming area. The temperatures were in the 90's and the humidity was just as high. The local leaders spread the news and soon hundreds of people were patiently waiting in line for treatment. Operation Pacific Angel was a joint/combined 13th Air Force lead assistance operation. The clinic operates with primary care, dentistry, optometry and women's health. Approximately 600 people were seen daily. It was not unusual for the work day to be 10-12 hours long. Dr. Salido and Rebecca worked alongside another U.S. Air Force dentist, a Cambodian Dentist, and an International Health Dentist, as well as dental students. Local interpreters were helpful bridging the language barrier. It was told that it took a person's monthly wage to pay for an extraction. Dental care is almost non- existent to the majority of Cambodia's people. Smiles of gratitude were in abundance as the Cambodian people thanked the Americans. The Air Force members felt they went a long way in improving relations and good will.

Ecuador

Setting up a Clinic in Ecuador
by Sheila Schworm, CDA, EFDA

In May I had the privilege of being a part of the medical church planting team going to Guyaquil, Ecuador in South America. The trip incorporated medical, dental and vision ministries into the church-planting strategies. Each day we were bused to a different area to set up a primary care clinic where a new church was being planted. The teams utilized doctors, nurses, dental hygienists, physician assistants, physical therapist, pharmacist, paramedics, optometrist, medical student, and any other persons willing to serve. Our objective was to augment the existing church planting effort by demonstrating the love of Christ in a tangible way and to strengthen relationships between the local church on the field and the surrounding community. A couple of days we traveled up to 2 hours one way to reach our destination. The days were hot, HUMID, and long. But at the end of the day, no matter how tired you were, it was worth everything you gave. The people were extremely grateful for us being there and it was such a rewarding experience reaching out and helping those who were desperate for medical care.

I have been asked so many times if I would do it again. Honestly, when I first returned I was so exhausted I could not even think of doing another mission trip. But now that I have been home and am rested, I would love to do it again. I am currently looking into another trip. This one will take me to Africa. If God is willing, I will go next summer.
