Linda Gibbens-West Scholarship Presented to Owens EFDA Certificate Program Student, Kami Klaus

Congratulations Kami Claus, 2010 Linda Gibbens-West Scholarship Winner!

On April 27th, Kami Claus, Owens EFDA Certificate Program student, was presented with the Linda Gibbens-West Scholarship check for $1,000, a certificate for framing, and a bouquet of flowers. Kami was very honored and appreciative!

ODEFA received about 30 scholarship application. Each one is graded by several different people who do not know the applicant’s identity or school. The five categories are neatness, spelling and grammar, financial need, passion for dentistry, and initiative. Each person can receive a high score of 25, based on a score of 0-5 in each category. Once the applicant with the highest score is revealed, the final test comes when their instructor is asked if they exhibit a positive and worthy attitude in the classroom as well as on paper!

Kami’s instructors gave a great recommendation when asked if she would be a good candidate to receive the scholarship.

Kami is a one of our best students. She is the total package! Well rounded, genuine, passionate about dentistry, skilled, has a positive attitude, asks for guidance, and accepts constructive criticism when needed. She is a great candidate to receive the scholarship!”

She loves the outdoors, so spring and summer are her favorite time of year! Ever since her boyfriend bought a guitar for her as a birthday gift, she has been learning notes, chords, and songs...

"I decided to go into Dental Hygiene because there is no better way to ensure that my family, when I have one, is healthy. I have always thought that a healthy smile is important! I have a sister who graduated from UT with a Bachelors in Molecular Biology and a minor in Chemistry She is so smart and encouraging."

Not only did Stephanie excel academically, she was very involved with sharing her passion for dentistry in many various capacities.

... "I am one of the Historians of SADHA. I have also served as a delegate to the ODHA annual session. At the 2008 annual session, I actually wrote a speech asking my fellow student members to vote me in as a Student Voting Delegate to the House of Delegates. This means that I actually had the wonderful opportunity.

Stephanie was very appreciative to be recognized for her many outstanding achievements!

... "I feel very honored to have been given all of these awards. It's very surreal, but very exciting! Thank you very much for choosing me for the ODEFA award. I look forward to working with you in the future as an RDH EFDA!"

ADA awards Toledo Dental Society grant for GKAS program

The following are excerpts taken from the ODA Today, June 2008, Volume 82, Issue 6 (Ohio Dental Association Monthly Newsletter)
By Liz Long, Staff Writer

The American Dental Association (ADA) has recognized an Ohio component dental society for its work providing care to underserved children. Last month, the ADA awarded the Toledo Dental Society (TDS) a $5,000 program growth grant for its Give Kids a Smile (GKAS) program.
Dr. Nanette Tertel, chair of the Toledo GKAS day event, said TDS members are excited and honored to receive the prestigious grant.
With the grant money, Toledo Dental Society members will take GKAS on the road. Using the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio (DCNWO) two-chair mobile dental unit, Smile Express, members will travel one Saturday every two months for the next several months to provide care at free medical clinics throughout western Ohio.
Tertel anticipates providing care to 20 - 30 children per visit. “Using the mobile dental office is a unique and effective way to provide a full range of dental services in the field to children who otherwise would not have access to dental care,” she said.
In addition to the funding from the ADA grant, the Toledo Dental Society will raise $5,000 in matching funds through corporate donations and sponsorship to help cover the cost of the new outreach.
The Toledo Dental Society has participated in GKAS events with the Dental Center of Northwest Ohio in Lucas County on the official GKAS day since 2003 and consistently has one of the most successful programs in Ohio. In 2006, TDS members began a partnership with Owens Community College dental hygiene program in Wood County.
Services provided include oral exams, dental prophylaxis, fluoride treatments and varnishes, radiographs, sealants, amalgam and composite restorations, stainless steel crowns, pulpotomies, endodontic services, and oral and surgical extractions. Children requiring multiple dental appointments are referred to dentist volunteers to complete the treatment for free.
Next year’s Give Kids a Smile Day is scheduled for Friday, February 6, 2009. Those interested in becoming involved with Give Kids a Smile events should contact Kathy L. Woodard, Ohio Dental Association director of public service at (800) 282-1526 or kathyw@oda.org for more information.

Direct Restorative Workshop:
A Hands-On Educational Seminar
Materials and Techniques to
Promote Dental Practice Success
Toledo Continuing Education Seminar
Friday, April 11, 2008
Sponsored and Presented by 3M ESPE
Seminar Host: ODEFA
The workshop was held from 9:00 am to noon at Owens Community College in the Law Enforcement building on the Toledo Campus. Although the course participation was limited, all seats were filled before the registration deadline.
Theresa Sansone and Randy DeMeester did an exceptional job of presenting the seminar and answering questions. The evaluations were very encouraging! The EFDA’s, EFDA students and Dentists who participated, all gave great reviews and would like to have more seminars in Toledo in the future.
One evaluation requested an all day seminar while another said it was the best hands-on seminar they had ever attended. Several people commented on how nice it was to share the camaraderie of fellow EFDA’s. Everyone enjoyed the breakfast and lunch and raved about Owens’s Gladieux Catering services!
ODEFA’s new tee shirts made their debut in Toledo at the ODEFA table! The phrase, “EFDA’s Create Beautiful Smiles” along with a picture of a happy, smiling tooth in the middle, was designed by ODEFA’s Treasurer and Columbus Component Trustee, Barb Adkins. Thanks Barb!
A special THANK YOU to all who participated and to Randy, Theresa and Gladieux Catering for making the day a huge success!

Owens Community College
Give Kids A Smile Day
Oral hygiene, radiographs and restorations were the focus of free dental appointments at Owens Community College as more than 100 area elementary and high school students' teeth were transformed to pearly whites as part of the nationwide Give kids a smile Day on Friday, February 1st. Owens Dental Hygiene Program, in collaboration with the Toledo Dental Society, offered a day of free dental services for "at risk" children ages six months to 18 at the College's Dental Hygiene Clinic. The Clinic is located in Health and Technologies Hall on the Toledo-area Campus. Additionally, area dentists and Expanded Functions Auxiliary provided restorative treatment and preventative sealants for patients on Saturday, February 2nd. Individuals interested in receiving free dental services made appointment reservations in advance. The event was very well organized, and a huge success! It was a rewarding experience to receive the appreciative "Thank You's " from the parents and see happy smiling faces on the children! Even the volunteers were wearing smiles! Thank you to the Owens Hygiene Program, the Toledo Dental Society, all of the area dentists and assistants and the large group of ODEFA Members who joined in the crusade to increase access to care for the underserved children in our area!!
